PROCEDURE FOR AUDITION
To fulfill the remaining part of the application, each applicant must complete an audition which demonstrates their dance performance ability. This requirement may be satisfied in one of two ways.
1. Audition in Person
Auditions will be held with members of the BYU Dance Faculty on the BYU Campus on Saturday, February 4, 2012. To register for personal audition, applicants must select "In Person" under the Audition Information on the online application. Successfully submitting your application guarantees the applicant an audition slot during the on-campus auditions.
Audition times are as follows:
Ballet | 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. 283 RB |
Ballroom | (by video only. Videos are due Fri, Jan 27, 2012) |
Folk | (by video only. Videos are due Fri, Jan 27, 2012) |
Contemporary | 10 a.m. – 12 noon 185 RB |

2. Audition by Video
To register for video tape audition, applicants must select "By Video" under the Audition Information on the online application.
- Please record two or three short solo (not group) selections from your recent repertoire.
- Please write your full name, current address, recording date, and area of audition directly on your audition tape. Video tapes will not be returned. We accept quality VHS tapes and DVDs.
- Video tapes must be received by application deadline: Friday, January 27, 2012.
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL APPLICATIONS WILL RECEIVE EQUAL CONSIDERATION WHETHER APPLICANTS AUDITION BY VIDEO OR IN PERSON.
Requirements for Personal Audition
Applicants who are proficient in more than one style of dance may audition in each style. However, we prefer that applicants select the style of dance in which they consider to be the most skilled or the style in which specialization is intended.
· Ballet applicants: Attend the audition class in ballet. This will be an advanced technique class followed by some pointe work for females. Wear modest, solid color leotards and tights with appropriate foundations underneath. Competence should be a performing level equal to that of BYU Theatre Ballet.
· Ballroom applicants: Video audition only. See 'Audition by Video' section above.
· Folk applicants: Video audition only. See 'Audition by Video' section above.
· Modern applicants: Attend the audition class in modern dance. Wear modest leotards and footless or stirrup tights with appropriate foundations underneath. In addition to the class you will be required to perform a ONE MINUTE selection from your personal repertoire. Accompaniment should be on a CD.
Requirements for Video Audition
· Ballet applicants: Should present center adagio, pirouette turns, small jumps with beats and a grand allegro that moves on the diagonal and/or in a circle. In addition, women should present pirouettes/fouettes on pointe and one-footed releves; men, beats and tours en l'air. The body should be attired in leotards and tights. Please limit to 10 minute maximum.
· Ballroom applicants: Should present two to three short dances with a partner. Group performances are not acceptable. If possible, syllabus figures for both International Latin and Standard Ballroom styles should be shown. (i.e. Bronze, Silver, Gold, etc.) Costumes are not allowed.
· Folk applicants: Should present one to three short dances of no more than 1:30 of each. If multiple dances are shown, they should exhibit different styles (i.e. World dance styles, percussive dance, modern, ballet, etc.) Costumes are not allowed.
· Modern applicants: Should present two or three short, contrasting selections from their repertoire which will show technical mastery as well as performance and creative ability. Solo or partner presentations are preferred.
